Understanding Telecommunication || Site Visit - Telekom Malaysia Berhad

Telecommunication plays a big part in our everyday lives through the exchange of information, and has become vital in connecting people effectively around the world. In Malaysia, one of the largest telecommunication companies is Telekom Malaysia Berhad, also known as TM.

On 14th November 2018, SSIET had organized an academic site visit to Telekom Malaysia Berhad at Jalan Were with a total number of 13 participants. The site visit aims to expose students to real world’s telecommunication systems, let students gain the skills of networking with the engineers working in Telekom Malaysia Berhad, and allow students to establish a network between them and other engineers in the telecommunication field.

After reaching Telekom Malaysia Sarawak by bus, Mr. Khairul, a TM Officer, gave a welcoming speech to the participants in a meeting room, followed by a self introduction between the participants and TM staffs. After that, Mr. Lim briefed the students on the current transmission systems, including the connection, operation and maintenance of Core Network Cables, which transmits data between Sarawak and the rest of the world via submarine cables that serve as Sarawak's optic backbones. He also explained on the ways that a local computer uplinks to the cloud server and UNIFI. The briefing was followed by a Q&A session, giving participants an opportunity to voice out their questions related to telecommunication.

After the briefing and a lunch break with the TM staff, the participants went for a tour to the "UNIFI" building which serves as the connection center to end users. Participants were exposed to the work field, looking at the vast amount of cables arranged according to different locations. They were also introduced to the operation and maintenance of signal transmission during the tour. At the end of the visit, a token of appreciation was given to Mr. Lim, and a group photograph was taken.
