According to the IEM Training Centre, a Professional Engineer has to sit through the Professional Competency Examination (PCE) in order to obtain a Practicing Certificate. This exam consists of 2 papers - Common Paper and Discipline Paper. On 27 October 2018, SSIET hosted a talk titled "Preparation For BEM PCE Exam For Electrical Engineers", led by Professional Electrical Engineer, Ir. Kuan Jew Xun, and Ms. Priscilla.

In his talk, Ir. Kuan firstly explained the Common Paper. He shared the different Contract Laws in Malaysia in terms of the construction industry, Engineers' responsibilities to society and the public, and more. After a short refreshment break, he then continued on to the Discipline Paper, delving deeper into Laws that are relevant for the practice of Electrical Engineers.

After discussing the two papers, Ir. Kuan shared several tips on how to tackle the exam questions effectively, and several techniques that he used in his experience. He also showed a few sample questions, and held a discussion session so that the attendees can join in and answer those questions together. As the talk came to an end, SSIET presented a token of appreciation to Ir. Kuan, and all the attendees took a group photograph.

All in all, SSIET hopes that this talk has helped increase the knowledge on the engineering regulations, while helping attendees know what to expect in both the Common Paper and the Discipline Paper for Electrical Engineers. A big thank you is extended to Ir. Kuan and Ms. Priscilla for conducting this talk and making it a success.

Date & Time: 11 May 2018, 3:30p.m.-5:30p.m.

Venue: G407, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus

Participants: 12 IET members, 4 non-members.

Swinburne Sarawak IET On Campus (SSIET) had successfully organized Professional Talk on project Management 2018 on 11 May 2018. This talk successfully exposed students and adults to the importance of Synchro 4D. Especially how Synchro 4D easily overcome problems arises from traditional meeting with its visualization advantages.

Following shows the activities conducted during event.

3:15 p.m.

Committees had arrived and set up the venue, G407. Early participants have arrived as well, and registered for attendance.

3:30 p.m.

Participants entered the venue and registered for the attendance.

3:40 p.m.

Mr. Andy Tiong, Senior Project Planning Consultant from PCSS Consultancy Sdn. Dhd. with double Bachelor Degree holder in Mechanical and Manufacturing, as well as more than 10 years of experience in project management industry, has arrived. Organizing Chairperson, Alex Liew has given his welcoming speech, with great applauds from participants.

4:00 p.m.

Mr. Andy Tiong first given the introductory talk on project management. Basically, he talked about how project management has a big impact on engineering society. He compared the traditional methods and current methods proven useful through project management.

Then, he emphasized on the importance of project management. Project management increases profit. Without project management, the situation would be chaotic and there will be big losses. Hence, project management enabled easier analysis of any situations as well as gaining profits, reducing losses. He mentioned about BIM (Building Information Modelling) as well as how it was popular, very useful for all engineers.

Finally, he introduced Synchro 4D, a powerful virtual construction software that enables the creation, analysis, and planning of projects on a visual interface. To be able to visualize how important was the delay of a project was better than assuming the current stages of any project. The problem with projects nowadays was that many of them are badly managed as well as badly visualized. This lead to unnecessary losses.

Synchro 4D easily solved the problems by integrating multiple software in one platforms. For example, a schedule could be synchronized with 3D model to produce a time-lapse of said model. The important things were you, as a user could easily change the schedule as Synchro 4D performs dynamically up to the point you could easily remove or add the changes done to the schedule. Be it schedule for construction or shipping, it could produce an accurate 3D model. Synchro 4D could calculate the costs and resources needed as well. Soon, the software might as well be able to simulate the effects of weather on the buildings but that requires extensive programming.

5:50 p.m.

End of professional talk. Appreciation Plate was given to Mr. Andy Tiong as well as a group photo was taken.

On 18th April 2018, SSIET organized two conjoining events in collaboration with Penang image detection company, ViTrox Technologies. The interview session is to help students to secure an industrial placement for the company as well as new recruits after graduating. The talk, which is held during the afternoon, will talk more on the company’s mission and vision, encouraging participants to be exposed to more challenging situations in order to grow.

The activities that occurred in this event are as follow:

10.30am

Arrival of ViTrox Technologies’ representatives, Elaine, Gary, and two others. Committees and representatives proceed to B3 room to set up for interview.

11.00am

Commencement of interview split into two groups of two. The interview was selected by the representatives beforehand through online submission to Google Drive. This is due to time constraint that not all interview can be done in a day and there is an excess of recruits already in Penang.

A total of 7 interviewees out of 17 were chosen and 4 were selected to be part of the industrial training program.

12.30pm

Lunch break and networking session between ViTrox Technologies and SSIET On Campus.

2.00pm

Arrival to B209 to set up for the talk.

2.15pm

Elaine from the Human Resource department of ViTrox, gave an introduction to the participants about the mission and vision of the company. It is an ever-growing family that has just moved to the new location which they referred to as a “campus”. The expansion of the company signifies unity and determination for success. The criteria for entering ViTrox is not about excellence in Academics, but rather the willingness to adapt and learn.

Gary, who was the next speaker, highlighted about the market growth of the company in Malaysia as well as overseas. Some of their products have made their way into many manufacturing lines and eliminating the need of extra labour. Machine vision developed by ViTrox is a very reliable equipment that has many advantages over a human such as being able to detect small errors in a short duration and the absence of tiredness. ViTrox also sent two representatives from different departments on how the company has nurtured them to becoming more successful engineers as well as developing soft skills.

Lastly, ViTrox also emphasized that those who have yet to go to industrial placement to send in their resume at the box near the entrance so that they will stand a chance to be chosen for the next batch of recruits.

4.30pm

Refreshments, photo taking session and networking session.

5.00pm

End of program.
