On the 13th September 2017, SSIET On Campus organized SSIET Talk by inviting a Swinburne graduate, Ms. Priscilla Toh. Ms. Priscilla Toh is also a past president of SSIET. There are a total number of 15 participants for this talk. The following talk provides a better understanding to all members or non-members regarding the information of IET. The information includes the benefits of joining IET, the use of SSIET and IET websites, explanation on the registration of chartered engineer, the importance of network with Younger Professional Section (YPS), and the elucidation of CPD. SSIET is looking forward to recruit younger members for the sustainability of SSIET.


Activities were as follows:

8:00 pm

Participants, SSIET main advisor, SSIET members and guest speaker arrived at G407.

8:05 pm

Ms. Priscilla Toh started her talk by sharing her experience being a SSIET member and how it has affected her becomes the person she is right now. Ms. Priscilla Toh then gave an introduction of SSIET and IET.

8:10 pm

Ms. Priscilla Toh also talked about the opportunity that can be assessed after becoming a SSIET member or committee. She further explained it by giving an example where a SSIET member earned an opportunity to fly to UK and presented his research to the world. Other than that, Ms. Priscilla Toh presented a better insight of CPD to the participants. CPD is a measurement of development which can be measured through talks, seminars and any other form of workshop. For a professional engineer, a tally of 40 hours CPD is required while the license is still valid.

8:15 pm

The use of IET websites was demonstrated by showing the features of E&TJ, IET TV, membership fees, resources and e-Library. Explanation of the difference in price for membership fees was done as it was pointed out by one of the participants. Other than that, Ms. Priscilla also explained on the registration of chartered engineer.

8:25 pm

The talk also touched on the importance of retaining the network with YPS. Through this network, SSIET members will be able to meet with working adults and other on campuses members through events like site visit conducted in west Malaysia and the annual dinner of YPS. Moreover, this is also a platform where SSIET members get the opportunity to broaden their views towards YPS and IET as a whole.

Ms. Priscilla also did provide the information and the benefits of participating in Present Around The World (PATW). PATW is a platform where participants will get to interact with participants from other regions and most importantly, improve the ability to present and talk to other people.

8:30 pm

Ms. Priscilla then emphasized the use of IET magazines and encouraged SSIET members to read them. IET magazines provide the latest engineering or IT-related news happening around the globe. Moreover, Ms. Priscilla clarified to every participant that the IET e-mail alias are no longer usable and advised the participants not to use it in the future.

8:35 pm

Q&A session was conducted by Ms. Priscilla Toh.


The talk ended with a closing speech by Alex Liew.
