On the 1st of November 2017, SSIET On Campus organized a Site Visit to Trans Paint Coatings Sdn Bhd, Kuching, Sarawak with a total number of 12 participants. The site visit is meant to provide an opportunity for the students to be exposed to the industry and to get an understanding on how theoretical knowledge is applied in practice.

The activities that occurred in this event are as follow:

1:30 pm

Participants gathered at Block A’s lobby of Swinburne Sarawak. Attendance were taken and the participants were asked to fill the indemnity form.

1:45 pm

Participants departed from Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Campus by bus.

2:00 pm

Arrival at Trans Paint Coatings Sdn Bhd. Participants were then lead by the factory manager, Mr. Daryl Lau to a meeting room. All the participants were asked to settle down while Mr. Lau set up his presentation slides.

2:10 pm

Mr Lau gave a welcoming speech to all the participants. He then gave a brief introduction about the company.


Trans Paint is a Sarawak’s local brand that manufactures and supplies decorative and architectural paint mainly to Sarawak, Sabah and Brunei. The factory consists Quality Assurance & Product Development Facility, Production & Storage Facility and Measuring & Testing Facility. Mr. Lau explained that in order to outstands their competitors, their chemists have been continuously conducting research in order to develop new products. For example, their current development is to replace all solvent-based products with water-based products which are more environmental friendly.


In addition, Mr. Lau briefly explained on the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) in manufacturing industry before directing the participants to visit around the factory.

3:15 pm

Participants were then visited to:

Lab (Quality Assurance & Product Development Facility)

Technical manager of Trans Paint factory, Ms. Emily demonstrated the production of water-based paint in a pilot-scale batch reactor. She then performed a few test to ensure the quality of the paint produced.

Production area (Production & Storage Facility)

Observe the production of paint in industrial scale. Understand how the equipment function.

4:00 pm

All the participants gathered at the meeting room after visiting those places. The organizing chairperson, Adeline Tan, presented Mr. Lau with a small plaque as a gift of appreciation. A group photo was then taken at the main entrance of the factory.

4:15 pm

The participants boarded the bus and departed for Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Campus.

4:30 pm

The bus arrived at Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Campus.
