On the 14th of August 2018, SSIET organised a technical talk for working adults to earn CPD points. The talk is about lightning protection system according to the standard; Protection against Lightning to BS EN/MS IEC (IEC) 62305. The talk is carried out by Ir Lim Kim Ten. He is actively involved in electrical standards development and is member of standard writing committees of electrical installations, protection against lightning, power quality, explosive atmospheres, medical and healthcare engineering, and functional safety, and as IEM representative in MyENC.

The activities took place as follow:

8:15AM

SSIET committees arrive 15 minutes earlier to set up and multimedia test to making sure it is working properly.

8:30AM

Participants and speaker arrived and registered for the talk. Organising committees also assist participants to the venue. Committee also went to get the refreshment ordered from a bakery.

9:00AM

The speaker, Ir. Lim Kim Ten begins with a short self-introduction and brief explanation on the topic, modules and the schedule.

9:30AM

The speaker went through module 1 which is introduction to lightning protection. He then explained all the standards which are relevant to the topic and device for lightning protection.

10:30AM

Tea break for the participants and also speaker.

11:00AM

The second module starts which is about protection against lightning for persons and livestock. This module begins with lightning accidents that happened in Malaysia. The speaker discussed about places that should include lightning protection system. Ir Lim Kim Ten also explained the components of major lightning hazards which are direct strikes, touch voltage, step voltage and flashover. Personnel awareness training is also included in the talk.

12:30PM

The speaker, participants and committee had lunch which was prepared by catering service. Committees and participants also took this time for networking.

1:30PM

Lightning protection components (LPC) are discussed during this time. The third module explains on the correct choices of lightning protection components. Considerations to be taken such as material, configuration and dimension of LPC. The difference and similarity of LPC standards used in USA and Europe are discussed and explained briefly. Ir Lim Kim Ten also explain the importance of material requirements of conductor sub-system as it is a crucial part in LPC.

3:30PM

Second tea break session for the speaker and participant to rest and discussion.

4:00PM

The last module talks about physical damage to (fixed) structures and life hazards. The speaker explains on the standard being used in this section and the types of lightning strikes and coupling mechanisms. Lightning protection system is also explained in the last module. Ir Lim Kim Ten also talks about the common mistakes made by engineers in LPS design.

4:50PM

Q&A session. Ended with a group photo. Participants left and committees clear up the place before leaving.
