Swinburne Sarawak IET On Campus organized an event on 26th February 2019. The event was a site visit to Gamuda IBS Sepang. This event was International collaboration with Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn Campus in Melbourne and Gamuda Berhad. The event was expected to understand how Industrial Building System will be a construction method that highly in demanded in future.
Based on the feedback, the participants were impressed by the robotics system the company deployed in large scale. It was unexpected that the making of concrete walls was done almost fully automated. Only a small number of employees was needed for quality control and minor adjustment.
Upon arrival, the parrticipants were greeted by Mr. Ibrahim, the manager from Gamuda IBS Sepang Sdn Bhd. He introduced the business model of Gamuda IBS which specialised in building construction using Industrial Building System. He explained that Gamuda IBS has some major projects that proved the method was faster than the conventional on-site construction by approximately 1 year. Although the speed of construction was fast, the quality was still maintained. They fully utilised robotics system in creating mould for the concrete, drying process and even assemble process.
Participants were pleased to be given the golden opportunity to view the production factory. Usually, the actual production line does not open to public for visit. In the production line, participants witnessed the mesmerizing large-scale robotics system. Each station was performed by 3 axis robot system ranging from customizing mould, deploying liquid concrete, to skinning of concrete surface. The participants also get to visit the prototyping house developed by the Research and development team. The prototyping house was developed to test the condition of house under daily environmental condition.
