On the 30th of November 2016, SSIET conducted a talk in Swinburne Sarawak by inviting a highly experienced engineer, Ir. Lim Kim Ten. Mr. KT Lim is a Professional Engineer which carries the title of Ir. He is a person of great talent and respected in electrical and electronics engineering industry. He started his career in electronics industry for 8 years, then further study in NUS to perusing Master Degree. Upon completed the MSc, he was doing lecturing in Electrical and Industrial Electronics engineering in Singapore Polytechnics, Dover Road, Singapore for 4 years. Upon completion of service, he decided to come back and serve the home country. Over this period of 17 years, he is aggressively involve in design and built of HT, LV and ELV electrical systems. His experience is wide spectrum ranging from HT, LV to ELV, and conventional construction method to industrial building system. Having said that, he is well equipped with the knowledge on the importance of compliance with national and international standards which is the center of his talk. All the committees of SSIET and students from electrical and electronic engineering faculty were encouraged to participate. The event started at 2:30pm and ended at 4:00pm. Happenings for the events are as follows:

1:00 pm

2:00 pm

Welcoming speech by Dr. Chua Hong Siang. Followed by a brief introduction and guest speaker’s background.

2:10 pm

Ir. KT Lim started his talk with some brief introduction about his job scopes, and asked around of the audiences’ field of study. He started of by asking the final year electrical and electronics students of how aware are they about the key engineering standards.

Next, he introduced about standards in general and how are they classified into products, services, processes, etc. Moreover he mentioned how European countries are trying to come back into the domination of global business by Horizon 2020 which aims to commercializing the Research and Development (R&D) and innovation to bridge the gap between marketing and R&D

Besides that, he talked about how Malaysians view standards as burdens, in fact it is a key to global business where he define standards as a language of global business where majority of the world follows and comply to. He also showed us how the Asian countries are currently dominating the standards game where he mentions the 3 Global Sister Organizations: IEC, ISO and ITU were lead by Asians.

In addition he talked about standards and business interaction which allows international acceptance, optimization of cost, cross border business, R&D activities, and Participating in standardization activities.

Moreover, he explained to us how standards can turn into profits and the process of issuing a standard as well as standards are reviewed every 5 years, and amendments can be issued when necessary. He also emphasized on a particular standard, which is the IEC 61508, which is about safety of a product, where he reminds the final year students to be careful when designing a product, where complying to this standard is important in order to be able to sell the product to other countries.

Finally, he grouped 3 types of standards, the first type being the fundamental standards, second being the product standard, tests data analysis, system standards, and the 3rd group which is organization standards.

4:50 pm

Q&A session is conducted by Mr. David Lee. The talk ends with a closing speech by Dr. Chua as well as presentation of appreciation gift by the OC followed by a photo taking session
