SolidWorks Workshop 2.0

Organizing Chairperson: Jonathan Ho Siew Kit

Date & Time: 30 September 2017, 8:30am – 12:30pm

Venue: Block A room 310, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus

Participants:

8 SSIET On Campus Members

4 Swinburne Sarawak student

On the 30th September 2017, SSIET On Campus organized Introduction To SolidWorks Workshop 1.0 with a total number of 12 participants, 1 lecturer from Swinburne and a speaker from JKR. The following workshop more complex SolidWorks features, the importance of the software and the wide applications of the software in the engineering world.

Activities were as follows:

8:30 am

Participants and fellow mentors arrive at A310 computer lab and proceeded to set up their computers after taking attendance. Current SSIET On Campus President, Jonathan Ho, gave a welcoming speech to all the participants and introduced the mentors, Dr. Chong Kok Hing and Ir. Christopher Jantai Boniface.

Dr. Chong then explained the importance of SolidWorks in the engineering world, followed by a brief overview on the topics which will be covered.

8:45 am

The first part of SolidWorks Workshop, taught by mentor Dr. Chong, is the brief concept on finite element analysis (FEA).

In SolidWorks, many features are accessible whenever an object is finished with dimensioning. Finite Element Analysis is a numerical method for solving problems for engineering and mathematical physics. Problems include structural analysis, heat transfer, fluid flow and etc.

10:20 am

Materials were given to the participants via email to save time on manually creating the object. The final assembled object is to be an adjustable tap which allows varying fluid to pass through the inlet.

Both heat transfer and fluid mechanics studies were done to the tap to study the pressure difference as the fluid passes through. For these features to work successfully, the correct planes have to be selected by the participants or the software will misread the implications.

10:50 am

Fifteen minutes break and socialising session with light refreshments provided.

11:20 am

A small quiz was given by Dr. Chong and the results were tabulated after fifteen minutes. The winner of the quiz was Multimedia and Design Officer, Wong Yeng Chien with 11 out of 13 correct.

Brief introduction to the features of heat transfer taught by Dr. Chong and arrival of Ir. Christopher.

11:45 am

Ir. Christopher is a practicing engineer at JKR. He explained his current project for the company that involves real time and simulated analysis of air-conditioning systems using SolidWorks.

The importance of a reliable air-conditioning system requires at least 2 weeks of analysis on a single room. One of the most important feature is to create negative pressure for the room to allow better circulation of air.

Real time analysis will provide a slightly less effective result as ideal conditions cannot be applied. Some problems that are commonly faced are air leaking through the window pane and also on the gap between the door and floor.

12:30 pm

End of program and photo taking session.

The workshop received pleasant feedbacks from all the participants and hope to attend other SSIET On Campus events in the future.
